As I’ve followed my path, it’s become clear that Witchcraft has a unique and fascinating lexicon. For those new to witchcraft, it can be a path paved with confusion. Some of the terminology used may leave you unsure or even overwhelmed.
Those starting their magickal journey will often read many books in their quest for knowledge, but in reading those books, can find themselves frustrated by the continual use of words they may not have come across before, and this hinders their learning. As an experienced, practicing witch who offers spells, rituals, and guidance to witches worldwide, I have lost count of the times I’ve been asked to write a book like ‘The witch‑ionary’.
After reading this book and learning the meanings of the most frequently-used words and phrases, you will find yourself more able to study the craft without impediment. While writing this book, I romanticised about witches worldwide curling up in front of a roaring fire with a witches’ brew, their familiar by their side, and consuming book after magickal book without stumbling over previously undiscovered words, and obscure phrases. It was this thought that motivated me to compile this useful, informative guide.
Although I had always studied witchcraft and divination, after hearing the rumours that my maternal great, great grandmother was a ‘fortune teller’, who would travel from place to place reading tarot, I was inspired to take up tarot reading myself.
I was awed when I discovered my own natural ability to read intuitively, and from that moment I really started to focus on my own witchcraft journey, and to truly identify as a witch.
After some time, having become so passionate about the craft, we opened our beautiful family-owned magick emporium, Practical Magick, in the heart of Yorkshire, England. It was a bustling little shop filled with love, warmth, and positive energy, a place embraced so warmly by those from all spiritual paths that people would even come from overseas to pay us a visit, and to have me read their tarot cards – such was Practical Magick’s reputation!
In November 2016 my daughter, Ella, and I launched our magickal monthly subscription box, Witch Casket, and we could not have known then that it would become so popular so quickly! It was with light and happy hearts we closed the doors of Practical Magick in February 2017, to focus on Witch Casket full time; knowing that we had not suffered one day of stress and anguish there, that it had been perfect from beginning to end.
We were so happy to be closing because of success, rather than failure – and overjoyed to realise that there are so many magickal people worldwide.
To this day, with Witch Casket, we continue to sprinkle our magick, not only here in Yorkshire, but all across this glorious planet! It is heart-warming to know that witches worldwide are learning from my lifetime of study and knowledge, performing my tried and trusted spells and rituals, working with the divination tools that I have created, and being empowered to live their authentic, magickal lives!
And more than ever, today, witchcraft runs through everything I do. I believe that if we can control our thinking and radiate the energy of someone living a more joyous life, we can attract that joyous life to us.
Our thoughts are like placing our order to the Universe, so we should place our orders wisely! It’s impossible to be positive 24/7 of course, but having faith that when things go wrong, we are learning, and growing, and things will improve; that in itself helps to bring positive change.
I think it’s essential to know that the most important things in witchcraft are our own intent and belief; that’s our magick! If we intend something, and we truly believe in it, and we work hard towards it, it will be ours. But if we don’t set that intention, or have that belief, no amount of hard work can bring us our desired outcome. Once you know your power, nothing can stop you!
I think there is an enormous need to feel more empowered. So much feels out of our control right now, and there is so much negativity around, so it’s understandable that so many people want to explore witchcraft and find their power! Additionally, with so much focus on media, image, material possessions etc. turning back to a more natural way of living feels like a beautiful act of rebellion! Taking a step back from the chaos to meditate, to take a ritual bath, or work with herbs, essential oils, and crystals, to research, to write, and to heal…doesn’t that sound irresistible?
